A group of good friends love Miami Spice and visit numerous restaurants during the August to September promotion every year. We ventured to Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Coral Gables on a Friday night to try out their version of Miami’s cuisine showcase.
The steak house’s Spice Three Course Dinner Menu runs $39.00 pp, which is an incredible deal for such a high end Gables steakhouse. The starters offer Louisiana Seafood Gumbo or their House Salad; the main entrée has 3 choices to pick one of: An 8 oz. Petite Filet, Stuffed Chicken Breast or Sizzling Blue Crab Cakes. Also included a side dish of delicious Mashed Potatoes or Creamed Spinach. They also offer several other items for an additional charge, (a 16 oz. NY Strip for an additional $14.95) which sort of kills the real reason for the Miami Spice savings! For dessert a tasty bread pudding was the lone offering.
Five out of six in our group orders the same dishes, filet and mashed potatoes… and one each ordered the gumbo, the crab cakes and the creamed spinach. And because 3 of us have been celebrating our August birthday for weeks now, we were allowed to pick one alternate dessert from their menu as a treat… the chocolate cake with berries.
Besides fresh, very hot bread, we also ordered some Cosmopolitans, a Martini and a Kendall Jackson white wine… everyone enjoyed their drinks and I heard no complaints. The water glasses were re-filled as needed without asking.
Starting with the savory gumbo, I was quite pleased. My fillet was broiled to perfection, served on a plate heated to 500 degrees so it stays hot. It tasted amazingly juicy and delicious. I believe it was the tastiest steak I’ve ever eaten. Likewise the mashed potatoes were incredibly creamy and savory. The bread pudding dessert satisfied the pallet and the decaf some ordered was good also. Our waiter was pleasant and quite accommodating.
The restaurant is a large establishment with several sections of tables, a bar area and a separate room for private events such as small banquets. Our table was towards the back next to one of the large exterior windows that run along both sides of the corner building. While there are tables all around yours, one never felt crowded or heard anyone else’s conversations; perhaps we were really into our own party’s stories. Needless to say it was a most enjoyable evening all around.
Besides curbside valet service, there’s a public garage in the same building with stairs down to ground level and glass doors that open just steps from the restaurant’s front door.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House is located at 2320 Salzedo Street (on the corner of Aragon Avenue), a block east of Le Jeune Road in Coral Gables.
