I had been wanting to visit this restaurant since I was one of five Judges in Miccosukee Resort’s Krome BBQ Cook-off Competition. Texas Roadhouse’s BBQ ribs had come in first place between local entries and third place overall. Having not visited their Flagler or Florida City locations, I was glad this one closer to me on Kendall Drive had opened up recently.
We were surprised how packed it was at 6:30 PM on a Saturday when four of us went to this new restaurant way west on Kendall Drive. Located in The Point Kendall Town Center, a newly created commercial area that hosts several new restaurants, including Olive Garden, Chuy’s Tex-Mex, and Panera Bread besides Texas Roadhouse. The center is basically located in front of the relatively new West Kendall Baptist Hospital.
While Texas Roadhouse does have a “call before you come” policy, we didn’t reserve a table. Since the place is quite large our wait was just 15 minutes. Later on it was a 30 to 45 minute wait. On our second visit a week later, we used their “Call” policy. On that night we waited but a couple minutes before we were shown to out table. There’s a friendly young staff and plenty of them moving around. The waiting area is just to the left of the front door, and there’s a colorful Juke Box right there. A wall is a tribute to the local high schools in the district with their team mascots on display. There’s a rustic wooden decor and slightly loud music playing at all times. Every hour some of the staff sing along and try to line dance to a louder tune. The restaurant is sort of divided into separate, yet next to each other areas. One area around a bar, has some flat-screens TV for those interested in catching a sports game.
The menu is quite extensive with mostly beef steaks, rib dishes and chicken. Steaks are offered in 6, 8, 11 and 16 Ounce sizes and include NY Strip, Porterhouse, two types of Rib-eye, and Fillet Medallions. You can Smother your steaks with Sautéed Mushrooms or Onions, Jack Cheese or Brown Gravy. The Chicken specialty dishes include Country Fried Chicken, Grilled BBQ Chicken, and Smothered Chicken. In the Country Dinners they offer Grilled Pork Chops, Pulled Pork and Beef Tips. Their Dockside dishes include Grilled Salmon, Fried Catfish and Grilled Shrimp. They also offer Texas Size Combos of all the above and Salads.
You get two sides with main orders. Items like mashed, sweet or baked potato, fries, rice, corn, green beans, chili, salads, etc. Appetizers are like small meals. There are also different Burgers, BBQ Chicken and Pulled Pork Sandwiches. They also have a Children’s Menu with popular kid meals like Hot Dogs and Mac & Cheese.
All types of cold soft drinks, and they also offer mixed drinks for much less cost than many places. Several types of Margaritas seem to be their specialty. Desserts include Apple Pie, a Big Brownie and a Strawberry Cheese Cake.
All of us enjoyed our meals on both visit. The ones who had steaks said they were cooked just right, and my ribs were really tender and pretty tasty. The pulled pork plate was even tastier. The real mashed potatoes, with just a hint of skin, were excellent. The corn side dish, while not on the cob, was good too. A large helping of butter on the side as well as cheese on the potatoes is available. They do not offer any baked beans on the menu.
The service is good, although on our second visit one of our meals wasn’t served with the other three and took more than five minutes to arrive. If you’re served a wrong a side item, they will bring you another without a blink. Prices are quite reasonable, average about $20.00 per person, unless you go for the more expensive steaks and dessert, which we did not do this time. We will definitely be back in the near future.
