Icebox Cafe, CityPlace Doral, features both artistic surroundings and delicious culinary art. Review by Ray Raposo

While Icebox Cafe has been around since 1998 with the flagship property on South Beach, it’s latest restaurant is located in the fabulous new and happening CityPlace Doral. CityPlace is a high-end design center featuring shopping, dining and living spaces.
It’s located at 8300 N.W. 36th Street in Doral, just west of the Palmetto expressway. Icebox Cafe offers visitors a modern American menu with an extraordinary global inspiration.
The artistic surroundings.
You can’t miss the entrance to the restaurant with it’s Icebox logo featured on a large bright orange wall to the left of the doors. Inside, the modern decor has a very clean and stylish industrial design.
Featuring large steel beams and pipes on the ceilings, warm wooden accent walls and floors upstairs, and large hanging lights, marble accents and tile floors downstairs, it all provides for a very pleasant dining experience.
Simple white shades over large glass windows to the west provide shade from the setting sun. The shades are raised after sunset, and the floor to ceiling windows provide a lovely and soothing view of the surrounding circle’s lights and water features. It features tables for four people as well as half-booth seating for four or larger parties as well. Besides the interior seating areas, there are also tables outside where you can feel part of the lively surroundings provided by CityPlace.
Icebox Cafe’s decor also features an array of lovely artwork, with sculptures and ceramics on a display wall and on some of the dining tables.
Owner Robert Siegmann’s mother is Naomi Siegmann, her custom sculpture pieces are showcased on the second floor, she is a celebrated sculptor living in Mexico City. His sister, Johanna Siegmann’s larger-than-life graphic art is a show stopper on the first floor, depicting her take on Alice in Wonderland’s dining experience. Robert has always loved vintage pottery which is simple in style, generally has a matte finish, and comes in beautiful jewel tones. A wall of colorful pottery greets guests and is reflective of the typical potters of that time period that he has collected for years which include Weller, McCoy, Flouraline, and Bauer to name a few.

Quote: “Adding a collection like the one we have at CityPlace Doral adds to the depth of the experience – this location is intended to feel like a home, rich with artwork and style yet also whimsical. We fill our home with objects that bring us joy and trigger memories. In a similar fashion, the experience we wish to convey at Icebox Cafe is intimate and long lasting.”

The imaginative cuisine.
Writer Ray and the group of ten friends at their table
A large group of 10 friends had the pleasure of visiting the new Icebox in Doral’s CityPlace during their pre-opening. We were all very impressed with the stunningly inviting modern design and decor of both the downstairs bar area, and the second floor dining space, with it’s wonderful views of CityPlace’s entertainment circle. We were treated to a wonderful array of tasty dishes from starters to main courses, to flavorful desserts, all accompanied with cold water, nice wines and a variety of other beverages. They feature an extensive wine list and many beers, and a variety of interestingly named specialty cocktails as well.
Some of the dinner specialties offered include a tasty grilled skirt steak with crispy onions and molasses rum glaze;
Faroe Islands salmon with pad Thai-style roast vegetable quinoa; braised short ribs with a sweet soy glaze; a tender pork chop Milanese; delicious soups and outstandingly colorful fresh salads.
Of the several desserts we sampled, the favorites included a delectable three-layer carrot cake; a raspberry chocolate mousse, and a two layer dulce de leche cake which was mouthwatering.

During our visit, the plentiful staff was attentive as well as accommodating, specially considering our large group. I expect the whole dining experience will get even better on our subsequent visits.

Besides their scrumptious dinner dishes, they also serve outstanding tuna tacos, plus a variety of burgers and imaginative sandwiches. A visit to CityPlace and a stop in Icebox for a soothing bar drink, or for a complete dining experience is highly recommended.
