James (Jim) L. Ferraro is a Miami-based leading environmental attorney, the founder of The Ferraro Law Firm in Miami, Florida in 1985, and one of two founding partners of Kelley & Ferraro LLP in Cleveland, Ohio in 1997. But he is best known for representing thousands of blue-collar workers in cases against major chemical companies–and winning.
Jim’s book, Blindsided, which details his most famous case against the chemical giant DuPont, launched in June 2017 and has since become a USA Today, LA Times, and Wall Street Journal Best Seller. The book has also been endorsed by Christian Slater and named a “must-read” by Bill Clinton.
Blindsided is a true story documenting Jim’s decade-long courtroom battle against the powerful chemical giant, DuPont, to bring justice to the family of a boy who was born with no eyes after his mother was unwittingly doused with chemical fungicide merely walking past a u-pick-it strawberry and tomato farm in Florida.
After the case was deemed unwinnable and turned away by major law firms, Jim single-handedly fought for justice and became the first and only lawyer in American history to successfully prosecute a chemical company for causing a birth defect. The trial was covered in its entirety on Court TV and received worldwide attention. Blindsided is also in early discussions to become a movie, based on raving reviews of the book and requests to bring it to the silver screen.
The Castillo-vs.-DuPont case still goes down in history as the first and one of the most important of it’s kind because it set the precedent for stricter environmental laws and the questionable use of the “junk science defense” in the courtroom.
Not only is Blindsided a heart-wrenching parent-child story, it’s a true a David-and-Goliath courtroom drama that reads like a John Grisham novel, except it really happened. Blindsided is an important and relevant must-read for all demographics to be aware of the dangerous chemicals that we, and our families, are exposed to without sufficient warning.
As an Environmental Attorney, Jim continues to go where most lawyers won’t to change the laws that allow the exposure of dangerous chemicals.
He has specialized in asbestos and mass tort litigation for almost thirty years, and has successfully tried many cases that resulted in multi-million dollar jury verdicts. In 1995, he received the largest compensatory award in the state of Florida for a mesothelioma case; and in 1997, Mr. Ferraro also had the highest compensatory jury verdict ever in the nation for a non-malignant asbestos case. Most recently, in August 2015, Jim tried an asbestos case against Georgia-Pacific with his oldest son, James, resulting in a $17,175,000 verdict. Based on that verdict, CVN Florida voted Jim 2015 Plaintiff’s Attorney of the Year.
